Contaminated drinking water presents a major health risk to people. Numerous studies have proven that there are contaminants in American drinking water sources and these do make their way to the kitchen faucet. Unfortunately most people are not aware of this or simple believe that these chemicals won't harm you.
The truth is that even if you do not notice any short term effect, there can be dangerous consequences in the long term. It is even believed that increased cancer rates worldwide are linked to drinking water stations being contaminated and unfiltered.
What is found in contaminated drinking water?
Viruses, bacteria, and parasites and other micro-organisms are what make it through to your home drinking water supply if your tap is unfiltered. In the past there have been outbreaks of various virus strains through drinking water contamination and there is no doubt this will occurs again. It is also thought that drinking water recycling will add even more virus contamination in the future.
In 1993 there was an outbreak of the parasite Cryptosporidium which affected over 500,000 people and caused 100 deaths. This outbreak was caused by animal waste not being filtered from public water systems. Due to the scale of this outbreak, the water turned brown in some areas which alerted people to a problem. Unfortunately most contamination does not cause any visible symptoms so people continue drinking it.
The only way to avoid drinking contaminated water at home is to install a home water filter system. There are many types available but the most common is the reverse osmosis system. These are affordable but do not filter out enough particles to be considered sage.
A better and more advanced filtration method is ion exchange, which is available in a few products. This approach can also be combined with other filter methods including carbon filtration and sub micron filtration. Filters that use combination filtering provide various levels of safety. If the particles get through one level, they are filtered out by one of the other methods.
Many workplaces use drinking water stations. Employees are lead to believe that these stations contain pure spring water or filtered water but they often contain just as many, if not more, microorganisms than tap water.
In conclusion, contaminated drinking water is a major health hazard and is something that the government chooses not to tackle head on. It is therefore up to you to protect yourself and your family from the dangerous micro-organisms in unfiltered tap water by purchasing a quality water filter that removes harmful substances but retains natural trace minerals.
