Animal Adoption - Costs, Benefits and Considerations

,
3D ANIMATION :

Adopting an animal can be an excellent choice for pet lovers. The advantages of adopting are numerous; costs are lower than buying a pet, animal shelters offer a large variety of companion animals, most mixed breed animals do not inherit breed specific health issues, older animals in shelters already have developed personalities and therefore it's easier to find a pet that will match with your lifestyle, older pets will be spayed or neutered and vaccinated, you may receive discounts for spay or neuter programs if you adopt a young pet, you can adopt a bonded animal pair or litter mates at reduced cost, and shelter workers are genuinely concerned that you find the right pet for your lifestyle.

Cost of animals and types of animals up for adoption vary by areas. In my area a puppy adoption is 0 and an adult cat is only . When you compare the cost of buying a pet, to adopting an animal, it's much cheaper to adopt. For example typical cost to purchase a puppy are 0-0, plus first year vaccinations 0-0 and possibly some health tests not provided by the breeder which can add another -0. Most often when you adopt a puppy from the shelter the adoption fee insures the puppy has already been treated for fleas, passed a health examination, received vaccinations (if the animal is old enough), and has been tested for parvovirus. Some shelters in the south also test dogs for heart worm.

In dogs, distemper, parvo-influenza, and heart worm are terminal illnesses, if they are untreated. Adult cats adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered, vaccinated for distemper, tested for Feline Aids(FIV) and Feline Leukemia (FELV) (which can both be terminal illnesses), and are treated for fleas. When you compare this with the cost of purchasing a cat (0-00) or taking on a "free kitten", animal adoption again proves to be much cheaper. Typical costs for FIV and FELV testing are - for each test, spaying at maturity -90, or neutering -, and first year vaccinations 0-0. So your "free kitten" can cost more than 0 for the first year of medical care. Additionally, many shelters also test for other diseases such as worms, and the shelter will be open and honest about known disabilities such as hearing or vision impairments.

Shelter employees and volunteers do a great job of helping you pick an animal that is right for your lifestyle. Typically, there are wide varieties of adoptable pets available. Most shelters have dogs and cross-breed puppies ranging from tiny to large, short-haired to fluffy, and personalities that range from shy lap dogs to high energy running companions. Cats selection can ran from large Maine-coon mixes, to high energy Siamese mixes, to fluffy mellow Angoras. My local shelter also services other companion animal adoption such as ferrets, pot belly pigs and goats. Occasionally, shelters have purebred animals available for adoption. (Also, see my article on purebred adoptions).

There are other benefits of adopting an animal from a shelter. Mixed bred animal may be healthier and calmer than some purebred animals. Certain purebred often have genetic disorders (due to the inbreeding). For example, many large purebred dogs develop hip dysplasia (a malformation of the hip joint that causes arthritis). Small purebred dogs with pug noses may develop respiratory disorders. Disorders associated with specific breeds can be found in mixed breed dogs and cats, but are far less likely to occur. Older pets available for adoption from the shelter have developed personalities and therefore it is easier to adopt an animal that will be right for your household. For example, if you have children, the shelter worker will introduce you to the pets that are the best suited to your household. If you're single and want a jogging partner, the shelter worker can introduce you to a healthy high energy dog companion. You may think you want a dog, but after speaking with a shelter worker, realize your lifestyle is far more suited to an adult cat. Some shelters provide ongoing benefits, such as reduced vaccination cost, reduced training costs or provide a list of auxiliary services.

If you want to select from a wide variety of pets, the best time of year is during spring and early fall which are breeding seasons. Shelters are inundated with strays. Christmas is a bad time of year to adopt an animal for several reasons; many people adopt at this time of year so selection will be limited, it hard on the animal (due to lack of routines and chaos that often accompanies the holiday) and, it's may curtail your travel plans. (See my article on Christmas animal adoption).

To find an adoption center in your area contact the Humane Association of the United States, check with a local veterinarian, or inquire at a locally owned pet supply stores. Each year the United States destroys more than 4,000,000 companion animals. By adopting an animal from a shelter you are saving a life. However, please consider the long term care required, before you purchase or adopt a pet.

Top Reasons Why You Need a Winter Vacation

,
3D ANIMATION :

The earth gives us tons of reasons to enjoy. If you are living in the western are of the world, you are most likely to experience the four seasons. Autumn, winter, spring and fall are the different types of seasons that occur annually. Summer is much associated with the blazing heat of the sun. Most of the kids love summer because they are off from class for two months. Moreover, plants are very much appreciated during the spring season. Meanwhile, fall has been the early indication of winter. The plants are starting to drop their leaves. Nevertheless, winter is also known as the white and cold season.

It is often associated with the white crystalline snow. Although, most of the time winter can create trouble due to the cold temperature it brings, everyone still rejoices because it is also an early indication of the Christmas season.

Winter is the coldest season of the year and with the characteristics of having longer nights and shorter days. It commonly occurs during the months of December, January and February for those who live in the Northern Hemisphere areas. Meanwhile, June, July and August are the months for the citizens of Southern Hemisphere to enjoy or suffer the cold climate.
The common effect of winter is migration for the animals particularly the birds. Some animals can no longer stand the coldness of the temperature. Migration is also one of the ways how animals survive on their own pace. Few animals who have thick coat manage to stay during the winter season. Animals born with the skills to adopt with the strange weather of nature are fortunate to stay alive. Their natural clothing thickens for them to stay warm throughout the season. Hibernation is also one of the coping mechanisms of animals when they can no longer stand the climate.

Animals are not the only living organisms that are very much affected by winter. Humans are also terribly concerned with the low level of temperature during such season. Winter often delays their works because the roads are already filled with snow. Machinery and factories are even forced to stop their operation because some of these machines are also affected with the low level of temperature.

Old folks are also generally affected of winter. They often complain about their arthritis and other bone related ailments. Sometimes even improvised and mechanical heaters can no longer neutralize the coldness of the weather. When you encounter this type of problem, the best thing to do is to call for a winter vacation. You can spend your days in a warmer side of the earth.

Tropical areas are best known for their enduring sun. You can rent a car and a hotel for your future summer vacation. Florida is also one of the most popular places where you can use up your vacation. If you are not yet familiar with Florida you can visit St. Augustine, it is one of its hottest spots. The good thing about having a winter vacation is that you will no longer worry about the cold weather, plus you can make most of your time.

The Truth About Trans Fats - How They Can Boost Your Metabolism and Particularly Burn Your Belly Fat

,
3D ANIMATION :

We often hear a wholesale condemnation of trans fats. Here are some facts about them:

What are trans fats?

Trans fats is an easier expression for trans fatty acids. They occur naturally and are also created artificially.

Natural trans fats

They occur in the digestive systems of ruminant animals such as bison, kangaroo, cows, goats and sheep. They are, therefore, found in their milk and meat.

[A ruminant animal is one that chews the cud-- the partly digested food that is sent back from the animal's first stomach to the mouth to be chewed once again].

Artificial trans fats

They are artificially created by passing hydrogen gas through the liquid vegetable oil. They are, therefore, also called hydrogenated fats.

Almost all the eatables such as crackers, cookies, potato chips that are produced with hydrogenated oil contain them. They are added to enhance their shelf life by keeping them fresh and crispy for years.

Man- made trans fats are very harmful for our health. They are even more harmful than saturated fats, which are considered the worst form of fats. The reason for this is that they not only raise the (bad) cholesterol level, but also reduce the HDL (High-density lipoprotein) also called good cholesterol.

HDL cleans the walls of blood vessels of the bad cholesterol, which can cause several problems by creating plaque in the arteries and blocking the free flow of blood. This can, therefore, cause health problems such as obesity, heart disease and cancer.

Here is, however, a shocking truth

Trans fats in their natural form can burn the belly fat if they are taken in small quantities as they are found in their host animals.

They contain trans isomers such as the CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) which is believed to have anti-carcinogenic( anti-cancer) and several other wholesome properties.

According to Mike Geary, a certified nutrition specialist, CLA is not only anti-carcinogenic, but is also a powerful fat burner. It can particularly burn the belly fat and make it slim and flat. It also improves the metabolism.

He, however, cautions against taking CLA supplements in form of pills as they contain artificially created isomer, which is different from the one found naturally in the animals. He further recommends that we should take CLA only from the meat and milk of the grass eating and not grain-fed ruminant animals. The beneficial CLA actually comes from grass.

5 Quick and Effective Weight Loss Tips

,
3D ANIMATION :

Are you lost in an avalanche of conflicting weight loss advice? You cannot begin any weight loss plan because you are too confused to start? The books in the bookstore and the ads on the Internet tell you to eat only animal protein, avoid animal protein, eat only fat, never eat fat, eat more fruit, never eat fruit... it is enough to make you want to stop eating altogether!

But weight loss does not have to be such a mystery. It is actually based on a very scientific principle that says it takes 3,500 calories to sustain one pound of fat, so to lose fat you simply need to "burn" more calories than you take in. So your goal should be to eat 500 fewer calories than you burn every day. Of course, the quality of those calories determines how quickly you lose weight, and how well you maintain your existing muscle mass and overall health in the process.

If you are ready to begin a healthy weight loss program that allows you to burn one pound of fat per week, simply follow these 5 weight loss tips.

1. Eat 4-5 small meals a day that total about 200-250 calories. This means you will have no trouble meeting the minimum calorie requirement of 1,000 calories per day, and should be well beneath your basal metabolic rate (the calories you burn in an average day without exercising).

2. Eat at least 50 grams of protein per day. Protein is an important part of any weight loss diet, as it keeps you feeling full and satisfied in between meals. It's best if your protein comes from lean meat such as chicken breast or fish, this will help keep your calorie count in check. Try eggs for breakfast, tuna for lunch, cottage cheese for a snack and chicken or fish for dinner, which would far exceed the minimum protein requirement.

3. Eat no more than 120 grams of carbohydrates per day, limiting sugar grams to 25 per day (15 is best). Just remember that not all carbohydrates are created equal: simple carbohydrates contain mainly sugar and are found in processed foods, while complex carbohydrates take longer to digest and keep you feeling full longer.

Complex carbs are found in vegetables and whole grains, so have a piece of whole wheat toast with breakfast or with your tuna sandwich at lunch, and plenty of vegetables at dinner. By all means, start reading food labels so your can shrink your sugar intake to the bare minimum of 15-25 grams per day. This will keep your blood sugar levels in line, which is absolutely critical to weight loss.

4. Exercise at least 30 minutes per day. If you are trying to slice 500 calories out of your day, it is unlikely you will be able to accomplish that simply by diet alone. You will lose weight much faster if you also include a daily cardio workout. Thirty minutes is enough, but try to vary the intensity of your workout by working hard for 2-3 minutes, then backing off for 2-3 minutes and repeating the pattern. By varying your heart rate, you program your metabolism to burn at a higher rate throughout the rest of your day.

5. Drink more water. And more water. And more water. If your kidneys are stressed due to dehydration, they kick their extra work over to the liver, which becomes too overloaded to provide optimum metabolic functions. So your body cannot lose weight when you are dehydrated, simple as that.

After following these 5 weight loss tips for a few weeks, you will find you have lost your craving for sugary snacks, your daily exercise will have become habit, and best of all, your jeans will fit!

Where Do I Get a Dog? - Part 3

,
3D ANIMATION :

One more place you can look for your next dog or puppy is directly from the people that breed the dogs. In this article we look at both backyard and professional breeders.

Newspaper Ads / Backyard Breeders: Local newspaper ads can sometimes be a good place to find a nice pet. The advantage here: local people that occasionally breed their own personal dogs place most of these ads. When you visit these puppies you are usually able to see the parents along with the puppies. In this situation you are able to observe the temperament of the father and the mother. You are also able to observe the puppies in relationship to the rest of the litter. Is the puppy you're considering shy and reserved or bold and rambunctious? Look closely; chances are his personality as a puppy will be his personality as an adult. Again, health is an important consideration here as well. Both of the puppy's parents should be in good health and both should have had their hips and their eyes cleared for genetic defects.

If these conditions are met, you've greatly enhanced your odds of having a well-adjusted, healthy pet. If you end up with a screwed up schizophrenic dog, you can rest assured it is your fault not the breeders.

Professional Breeders: These are people that have devoted a big part of their lives to a specific breed of dog. They all believe their breed of dog is the absolute best. They are located all over the country and generally have multiple litters of puppies available throughout the year. Let me caution you, these people are serious about their dogs and like most dog people (me included), they are all just a little bit crazy. They invest a great deal of their time and money in trying to breed the healthiest dogs they possibly can. When you call to inquire about buying one of their puppies you are likely to be grilled like you're interviewing for a job with Homeland Security. There is also a good chance they will make you sign a contract agreeing not to breed the dog you're getting, unless they say its OK. By the time you're done talking to them, you'll be asking yourself why you don't just go to the pet store. Hang it there and don't give up. When you buy from a reputable breeder, they stand behind the dogs they sell. They will take the dog back if it doesn't work out or a serious health issue arises. In my experience, professional breeders really do care about their animals and they want the best for them. This is not an emotional way to buy a dog. The breeders won't allow it. Like it or not, they will make damn sure you know every possible thing about that breed before any cash trades hands.

One word of caution here, not every dog produced by a breeder is perfect. Be somewhat leery if the breeder says something like, "I have one puppy left, but I'm thinking about keeping it for myself." Or, "I just had one puppy returned by someone who changed their mind." Two questions that would pop into my head are, "Why is this puppy the last one? And "Why was this puppy really returned." If the breeder can't give you a comforting answer, seriously think about continuing your search. Searching for the perfect dog only takes a finite period of time. Living with an unstable crazed animal can last considerably longer.

To find reputable breeders, pick up a copy of Dog World or Dog Fancy magazine and look in the breeder's section. You can also check online with the specific breed national associations. Many of these sites have lists of their breeders. Pick up the phone and talk to as many breeders as you can. The bad news with going the professional breeder route... Don't expect to be a guest on Oprah any time soon.

There are many different avenues to explore when looking to acquire a new dog. Unfortunately there is no "best" way to go about it. I encourage clients to approach getting a new pet with a ton of questions. When all your questions are answered, you're ready to start cleaning up a new puppy's mess. Congratulations.

Training a New Puppy - 3 Essential Things You Need to Know to Raise a Healthy and Friendly Pet!

,
3D ANIMATION :

Training a new puppy should be focused around continuing the lessons he learned from his mother. This way you can eliminate some of the more annoying habits like excessive barking or biting and raise a friendly and well-behaving dog. You need to remember that the moment you adopt a new puppy you take the role of his protector. This is important because your dog is not going to teach himself the stuff you want him to know. It's your job to make sure he understands what's allowed and what's not.

Training A New Puppy Part 1 - Why Crate Training Is The Best Way To Go?

While training a new puppy there are a few major things you need to sort out first. Your dog needs to feel comfortable in his new home and learn to eliminate outside as soon as possible. Both of these things can be achieved with the use of crate. Additionally it will help you keep your puppy out of trouble while you're away or make it easier to travel with him. The idea behind the crate is to make it your dog's den, his own sanctuary, place where he can hide from all the stress and fuss of an everyday life. Because dogs are naturally clean animals he will not soil it and will have to learn how to resist from eliminating until he's left outside. If you decide to take him on a family trip take the crate with you because it will make it easier for him to adjust to the new environment.

Training A New Puppy Part 2 - Why Is Appropriate Diet So Important?

Well, if you feed your puppy with crappy food and don't pay attention to scheduling the meals properly he may end up getting obese and unhealthy. More medical problems mean more visits to the vet and more money spent on medications. Also, your pet can get involved in such undesired habits as eating his own stools as a way to complement his diet. Because we don't want none of these to happen let's talk a bit about another important aspect of training a new puppy - preparing meals.

First thing you need to know is that your puppy will need 3 meals per day until he reaches 20 weeks of age. Make sure to feed him with dry kibble (the type suitable for his age) as it already contains all the nutritional elements he needs and is beneficial to his teeth (makes them harder). Also, don't leave the food bowl available for more than 15 minutes. If your pet didn't eat everything you had given him simply take it back and give it to him during the next scheduled meal. Dogs are voracious animals and they can keep eating unless someone stops them. As a result they can quickly get obese and loose fitness.

Training A New Puppy Part 3 - How Can Plenty Of Exercise Time Help My Dog?

Dogs are lively creatures and they need movement to burn the fat and maintain a good health. If you provide your pet with enough exercise you may also save yourself a lot of time and nerves on fighting with some of the most common dog habits such as excessive barking, biting, chewing or eating poop.

All of these can be eliminated if you'll keep your dog occupied and make him as tired as possible by implementing elements of obedience training, playing games or taking him on regular walks. Remember, training a new puppy without devoting enough time to his needs has no sense so if you can't afford spending an hour or two daily (at the beginning of your dog's life) you may want to reconsider purchasing a new dog.

Domesticated Pets Do Not Stand a Chance With Wild Predators

,
3D ANIMATION :

Many people who live a suburban life love their pets, and yet, they want to get out of the growing city, and move to a more rural paradise; one with mountains, lakes, forests, and open space. Who can blame them? They want to live in a scenic paradise, unfortunately, there is only one problem, they have domesticated pets; little dogs and cats.

You see, you have to be very careful in these rural areas because there are coyotes, wolves, and big birds, etc. They are always looking for tasty morsels. Domesticated pets do not stand a chance. The reality is that most domesticated animals although we think they are very smart, are not nearly as smart, cunning, or wise about their safety as they should be.

This is because when you feed an animal, they don't have to think about much and they can just kick back all day. Because they are not using their brains to survive, and over many, many, generations they have been dummied down. Many wolves have similar IQs to Dolphins, and they hunt in packs. They use various tactics to strategically trap their prey, surround them, and attack.

And in case you didn't know it, birds of prey are cunning and very smart, and their eyesight is five times as good as your little cat. The reality is domesticated pets don't stand a chance with Wild Predators, especially on their home turf.

If you let your domesticated pets outside in such an area, it is only a matter of time, until one of these predators grabs them and haul them off, or flies away with them and in their claws. This is something you better think about if you are thinking about moving from suburban life to a rural scenic environment. Please consider all this.

Ten Ways to Improve Your Nature Observation Skills

,
3D ANIMATION :

Nature observation is inspiring, unpredictable, frustrating, but ultimately rewarding.

You can enhance your nature observation experience and even improve your ability to spot wildlife by mastering a few techniques. When preparing for a hike or a camping trip , take a few moments to practice these simple skills and you will be amazed at the value it adds to your outdoor experience.

1. Before you hit the trail. Study a map of the area noticing the shape of the land and where water sources are located. Look for transitional areas, fields bordered by woods or creeks feeding into ponds where animals are likely to move in and out. Your goal is to spot wildlife before it spots you. Checked or camouflage-patterned clothing helps blur your outline, but you also need to be positioned so your scent, your shadow and your movements don't give you away.

2. Think like a wild creature. Predators, including humans, have eyes in front of their heads; in prey species the eyes are on the side of the head. Predators have better depth perception, while prey have the advantage of a wide field of vision. The sight, sound and smell of a human frightens most animals away. If you get used to noticing movement at the edges of your visual range, you'll see more than if you're staring straight ahead or down at your feet. I find it helpful to practice developing my peripheral vision and my deep breathing when stuck in traffic or on waiting on a long line. Practice fox walking (keep your weight on your rear foot until after you gently set your front foot down) to help you walk quietly in the woods.

3. Use all your senses. Cup your hands behind your ears to help you locate the source of sounds. Learn to distinguish bird songs and calls, frogs, rodents and other animal voices. Every utterance has a meaning, whether it's to alert others to a predator, announce territory, attract a mate or locate a family member. Have you ever noticed that animals have wet noses? Moisten your nostrils to enhance your sense of smell. Feel the difference between the packed down trail earth and the loose leaf litter and twigs off trail. This is helpful when traveling at night. Practice walking short stretches with your eyes closed. Did your hand touch that spider web or protruding branch or did you walk into it? Trust your intuition. If you feel like you're being watched, a curious or frightened animal may be just off trail waiting for you to move or turn away.

4. Practice practice practice. In addition to developing your peripheral vision, try fox walking to see how close you can get to your cat or dog before your pet notices you. If you have access to a pond or lake, try fox walking to see how close you can get to a duck, a goose - or a green frog. Try sitting quietly for five minutes, gradually increasing the length of time you can sit without fidgeting. Many people use simple deep breathing exercises to help slow down while still remaining alert.

5. Location location location. Now that you've studied your map, be on the lookout for those transition areas on your hike. As you approach these areas, slow your pace and focus your vision on the most distant ground, scanning the area. Find a spot with a slight rise, a rock or tree to prop your back against, dappled shadow to soften your outline and a dry, cushioned spot to sit and wait. Wind carries your scent even farther than 25 feet, so make you're down wind. You want your scent to blow behind you, not in front of you.

6. Dawn and dusk are prime time. Plan to arrive at your destination at least 90 minutes before sun rise (first light) or stay an hour or so after sunset. This is the time most animals are active. Some are going home for the day; others are just starting their nightly activities. If you are settled and still, blended into the environment, animals will go about their normal business rather than hiding or running away.

7. Blend in. Even the shortest human towers over most wildlife. With our frontal vision staring down at them, our sudden, jerky head and hand movements, our heavy-footed gait and the fact that our scent travels 25 feet in all directions on a windless day, most animals will detect us before we ever notice them. While traveling to your destination stop frequently, scan the area. If you notice a horizontal line among the vertical trees, is it the spine of a four-legged animal or a broken tree limb? On sunny days use shaded areas to conceal your shadow. Light hitting your back outlines your silhouette, which is just as revealing as when your shadow stretches out ahead of you. To conceal human scent, some nature observers keep their outdoors clothing in a box with wood chips or crush native plants.

8. Spotting wildlife successfully. The more you know about where an animal is likely to live, whether it is active during the day or at night, where it builds or finds shelter, when it breeds or if it migrates, the easier it will be to narrow your identification if you only catch a glimpse. I spot more animals when I'm engaged in writing, relaxed, still and using peripheral vision. By posing no threat, several species of animals including blue jays, catbirds, chipmunks and even deer will step out of the shadows to check you out. There are techniques for making noises that will cause animals to come out of hiding, but because humans pose such a threat to wildlife, I refrain from doing this.

9. Develop patience. In our results-driven culture, speed is rewarded, but in the natural world this just doesn't apply. The more sounds, sights, smells, textures and patterns you can identify, the more you will realize just how much you've been missing all along.

10. Lifetime learning. I just learned that rabbits are easier to approach just before a storm. I also just learned that the robins I watched out my window all winter have migrated to Canada and the robins eating the worms from the lawn all spring and summer came here from the south. I still don't know why these things are true, but I'll eventually find out. Mastery of any skill takes a life time. I spend as much time reading and researching as I spend in the field. It is the best investment I have ever made.

Give Me 3 Minutes and I'll Tell You Everything You Need to Know About Tooth Crowns

,
3D ANIMATION :

At some point in every adult's lifetime, the need will arise for a tooth crown. The history of this dental object can be dated as far back as 2500 years ago with the Etruscans, and then it disappeared. In the 1700's, it reappeared in the form of crude materials (animal and human teeth held in place with metal wire). In the 1800's, true innovations were made to the area of dental care with the introduction of porcelain and the use of gold to cover the root. As technology reached dentistry in the 1900's, tooth crowns became detachable and metal casting made it efficient and aesthetically appealing. Today, it can be created and placed in a matter minutes.

The dental crown owes its use and function to the cavity. Once a cavity caused decay - then the use of a tooth crown replaces the hole to provide the function and appeal of a tooth. It protect the weak or cracked remains from shattering, and also be used to cover a dental implant or to hold a bridge in place. Many individuals have a problem with grinding teeth. Dental crowns can be placed on the worn teeth.

A porcelain dental crown may provide the look of regular teeth, but certain care may be necessary when biting down on hard objects or food. It is recommended not to eat hard candies, as it could loosen the crown and sticky candy, such as taffy could pull it away. As for maintenance, the same principles that apply to regular teeth apply here. Maintain a routine of brushing and flossing to prevent any further damage and lessen the need for more tooth crowns in the future. Fluoride treatments will help hold the dental crown.

Safe and preventive maintenance will provide a sound setting for dental crowns and offer a smile that may have not been possible without this innovation.

And Then Came August [A short Story of a Father and a Son]

,
3D ANIMATION :

And Then Came August
[A short Story of Growing up]

In 1981, when Christopher Wright was thirty-four, he was two years away from becoming sober, the Holy Spirit would descend upon him, and he’d never drink again. Yet, at the start of this story he has as yet gone through this sobriety process, he is in a semiconscious state. As you first witness him, he is thinking, ponders about, drifts off, frequently he thinks he can indeed go without drinking, slightly madding, and shameful for not trying, but his world is a fog, and he is aware of it, and he is getting tired of it. He is happy to most people he meets on the surface, but inside him he is inertly mad, feels dirty: this feeling varies of course, he thinks himself rather exceptional of a person at times as well; yet unsophisticated (which he is not), hard to adjust to his environment, and he feels he has more goals yet to fill, but death is better than living an unhealthy life: a life going back and forth to the bar each night; in an unhealthy state all the time, hard for him to be cheerful, pleasant most of the time; and he is attractive to women, always has been, in particular one at the moment. He thinks he can somehow accomplished something big, yet his options seem to be diminishing as time passes on, and his drinking increases. He sees heaven as a way home (if indeed there is a heaven, and do drunks go to heaven, he is unsure, perhaps that might be the unpardonable sin, yet he feel it is not); yes, heaven would give him immortality and a safe distance form the bottle; and death is always around the corner, in a corner of his mind. But being opinionated, and still functioning pretty well, he might have a chance if he can change, if only he could get the courage to confront his alcoholism, where most of his demons come from.

Now Christopher Wright, more familiarly known as “Chick,” left his home at an early age, St. Paul, Minnesota and had spent eleven years in the Army. He now came home from war a Staff Sergeant (the Vietnam War). And in the years to come, five years to be exact, he gathered to himself some one million and three hundred thousand dollars, from real-estate transitions. He had created some ill will from his family members, neighbors, and was known for a while as “The Landlord King.”

This occupied his energies for a while, and during this time, he had become sober, yet he had a heart attack, a stroke, and acquired a neurological disease, then determined to set apart the remainder of his life to the honorable rejuvenation of the world’s poetry; trying to be like all the great poets before him. He refined himself, no liquor, mostly literature; body building, Sunday walks in the part, medicines, patience, rest. From a sofa chair he read hundreds of books , theories, concepts, he rid himself of his hypothetical enemy, ignorance, he become a scholar, with degrees and all such fine things. A campaign, that took him around the world several times, through the following fifteen years, during which he displayed himself infinitesimally, equal to any scholar alive. The year in which this story opens finds him tiresome, he has grown halfhearted; his thoughts run a great deal on his past war experiences, his illness, his wife and children who have left him.

Early in his life Mr. Wright had married a woman several years younger than he, who brought him into the circles he now so admires (he had married in 1972, after returning home from the Vietnam war, and had a child), and enjoys, an impeccable entrée of scholars.

His ex wife, had borne him a son and, after the magnificence of this performance, she had left him, because of his looming illnesses. The boy, Cody G. Wright, became an a great soldier in his own right, in the United States Army, a Captain, and a connoisseur of good form in all military duties, a good example for others.

Cody had written his memoirs under the title: “And then came August,” about the war he had been in, the war in Bosnia [1997]. On the gossip of its formation this work was quickly bid for among publishers, it did obtain a private printing, but only one, it was not powerful enough that the public demanded a second printing.

Young Cody had one picture of his father, he was on a teeter-totter, and his father was behind him, they were in a park together. It was such a common picture he kept in his house, now in Columbus, Ohio, that it was as if, a part of the furniture. It showed the background of a park in the 1970s, He had long light brown locks, dressed in a Jean jacket, in the city of Dieburg, West Germany, where he was stationed for a short period of time. This was Cody at four years old.

His memories of Dieburg, thin as they were, were unformulated and pleasing. He was so very young, but he remembered guests coming to the apartment, meeting his father at a guest house with him tagging along, his friends holding him up high in the air in the bars, his father showing him off, breathlessly his father on the edge incase someone dropped him; occasionally making whispers to his wife, and friends to be more careful with him, and he’d sing his songs on the guitar, and the strange dialect of the Germans. He remembered some of these things, and his father told him of these things, and he thought then, they were part of his memory.

It was years later, after Cody had grown up, when he was about ready to go into the Army himself, he moved in with his father, just his father. He was continually going out at night, on his drinking trips. It wasn’t like the trip he once took with his father, a fishing trip up to Gull Lake, and there in the cabin by the lake he and his father swatted mosquitoes half the night, laughed the other half, and broke into the next door vacant cabin so they could get a good night sleep; went fishing in the morning. Nor was it like the picnics he took him on. His father was in despair of this unclear miserable life his son had taken: a path he once had taken.

So to Cody, life was a struggle against youth, and he waited for a decision, and he made one and the Army made one: within six months, impressionable months, he left his father’s house, and faded off into the imperceptible Army life. It was August, l991, he was nineteen-years old. It was for him a concession to his boring life, accommodating his hyperactivity, his lack of money, and refinancing perhaps his nightlife, body building. He told his father in a letter, “It has nothing to do with us, as far as me going into the Army, it is time for me to consider a more adventurous life, so please do not take this in any other way.” Hence, he didn’t want to hurt his father, but he was nearly exhaustive with his bland life. His father understood, it had bestowed patient frowns, interrupted his play, devoured his months, when he went in the Army, and untiringly, it gave him a variety of splendor; thus, it would do the same for Cody, he was sure.

As a youth before his teens, he had lived almost totally within himself, an inarticulate boy it seemed, always thinking, seldom cross with anyone, an all-American boy you could say. Polite, spirit filled, and one who loved animals, nature. Shy and sensitive as a youth,

Omega 3 Fish Oil - The Evidence

,
3D ANIMATION :

Omega 3 fatty acids are known to be beneficial to health in a number of ways, and scientific evidence is accumulating to back up the beliefs of those who have taken it for years (in the form of fish oil). Some scientists believe that, as well as reducing the risk of sudden cardiac death, Omega 3 can improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels. They can also reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by keeping the heart healthy.

The evidence suggesting that Omega 3 fatty acids prevent heart disease is of several scientific types: epidemiological evidence and archeological evidence support the claim, as well as evidence from animal studies, observation studies, and interventional studies.

Epidemiological evidence

Studying populations to determine frequency and distribution of disease is known as epidemiology. Alaskan natives as well as Eskimos in Greenland and Japanese people in fishing villages have been found by scientists to have low rates of sudden cardiac death and of cardiovascular disease - this is attributed to the large amount of fish in their daily diet.

Archeological evidence

Our early Paleolithic ancestors were, according to archaeological evidence, very fit and free of coronary heart disease. Their healthiness was due partly to the active lifestyle of the hunter-gatherer, which required that they exert themselves on a daily basis in order to survive (to gather food and protect themselves from harm). Diet also played an important role. They ate natural foods which contained a great deal of fruits, vegetables, nuts, lean protein, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, and Omega 3 fatty acids. At this time they would have consumed few saturated fats, no trans fats, and no refined grains and sugars. This contrasts sharply with the modern diet which usually includes a lot of processed food.

The undomesticated animals eaten in the Paleolithic period were also very different from those we eat today. Then, the meat would be rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, since the animals would graze on vegetation and algae which was itself rich in Omega 3. Our domesticated animals are fed on grain and corn, making the meat high in saturated fat but low in Omega 3 fatty acids. The same goes for farmed fish, which is usually lower in Omega 3 than wild fish.

Modern people lead more sedentary lives than the hunter-gatherers, despite the fact that we are genetically designed to be active in the way that they were. Our diets have a high quotient of saturated fats and trans fats, as well as grains and refined sugars. Such diets do not have a high level of Omega 3 fatty acids which are known to be beneficial to health. This combination of low activity and high intake of the wrong foods leads to such problems as high blood pressure, diabetes and coronary heart disease, as well as contributing to the epidemic of obesity.

Animal studies

When scientists performed experiments on dogs, rats and marmosets, they found that Omega 3 fatty acids could prevent ventricular fibrillation when given to animals just before heart attacks were induced - this prevented sudden death. Omega 3 was also found to halt ventricular fibrillation once it had started. This suggests there is a strong possibility Omega 3 fatty acids could work to avert ventricular fibrillation in heart attacks in humans.

Evidence from observational studies

The Nurses' health study and the Physicians' health study are large, long-term observational studies examining the relationship between dietary intake of fish oil or Omega 3 fatty acids, and the risk of sudden cardiac death and heart disease. The Physicians' study began in 1982, and followed over 20,000 healthy male physicians for 11 years. They filled out questionnaires on lifestyle and diet at 12 months and 18 months, having given data on lifestyle, diet and coronary risk factors at the study's commencement. In 1998 the results were published in JAMA (vol. 279, pg. 23) under the title 'Fish Consumption and Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death'. The findings show that men eating one or more fish portions a week had a 50% lower risk of developing sudden cardiac death, compared with men who ate fish less than once a month.

Conclusion

There are reams of evidence which shows the benefits of a correct balance of Omega 3 in daily diet, and more is accumulating all the time.

The Gentle and Natural Solution to PCOS and Infertility

,
3D ANIMATION :

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a major underlying cause of infertility is commonly seen in women with infertility issues. Irregular menstrual cycles and not ovulating regularly make it difficult to get pregnant. This can lead to feelings of frustration and hopelessness.

Insulin resistance is an underlying cause of PCOS, whereas, the body becomes insensitive to insulin production and reacts by producing even more. Raised insulin levels can then lead to hormonal imbalances with increased testosterone causing excess body hair and acne. Formations of cysts in the ovaries can be caused by elevated levels of insulin. Hormonal imbalances and ovarian cysts make the chances of conceiving difficult for a woman.

In managing your PCOS whether it's with pharmaceutical drugs or a more holistic approach that would include nutritional supplementation, acupuncture, diet and exercise, there are some some fundamental approaches to keep in mind that you can fit in to your lifestyle and increase your chances of successfully conceiving.

Tips to Boost Your Fertility

  • You might choose to work with both a conventional infertility specialist and a naturopathic doctor to access nutritional and herbal ways to enhance your fertility.

  • Try getting sufficient amounts of sleep and take naps when you feel tired or run down.

  • Include plenty of vegetables, good fats, and lean protein into your meals.

  • Cut out coffee, alcohol, sugar, soft drinks and refined carbohydrates.

  • Whenever possible, choose organic foods that would include plenty of vegetables, good fats and lean protein. If animal products are part of your diet consider hormone-free and antibiotic-free products. Animal products contain a high content of hormones, pesticides and herbicides which are known endocrine disruptors and can have a negative effect on your hormones. Cut out processed foods. Vegetarian diets and fiber rich diets have been shown to have beneficial effects.

  • Try eating locally grown foods in season. Your local farmer will love you for it.

  • Add cinnamon to your food. It has been found to improve insulin sensitivity for women who suffer with PCOS.

  • Taking a prenatal multivitamin and folic acid to prepare for the possibility of conception.

  • Exercise regularly but don't overdo it. Don't neglect your exercise during hectic and stressful times. Exercise has been shown to cut down on stress.

  • Find ways to relax and engage in creative activities as this cuts down on stress. Yoga, massage therapy and acupuncture have been shown to enhance relaxation and reduce stress.

  • Herbal treatments have been found to successfully treat PCOS. Seek a qualified herbalist.

  • Acupuncture treatments have been found to help women with infertility issues.

You don't need to feel alone or hopeless as there are so many helpful resources available. Learn more about PCOS and conception. Forums are a wonderful resource for information and support. Healthy bodies and healthy minds are better prepared for conception. But above all be gentle with yourself in your efforts to conceive.

How to Be a Pack Leader of Your Dog

,
3D ANIMATION :

Finding out how to be the pack leader of your dog will be one of the best things you ever do when training your dog.

It takes a certain amount of time for a dog to adjust to his/her new environment. This adjustment period is an important time for you to establish your role as the pack leader to your dog.

It is during this time that the dog should learn to accept your leadership and follow your command because if not, it could be quite troublesome for you to have a disobedient and uncontrollable dog.

Unlike most breeds, Staffordshire bull terriers are relatively easier to train .Though sometimes they really have a streak of stubbornness, so you need to be firm in handling them. Here's how to become a pack leader to your dog.

During playtime, win the majority of games. Though not all. That way your dog will still have interest. Imagine if they never win why continue the game?

Just like in any pack of animals, the strongest one is their leader. Therefore, when you play games with your dog it is critical that you win most of the time in order for your dog to see you as someone strong and in return, they will respect and obey you.

Make sure that the toys you play with are special ones and are brought out and put away during play time. That way there is no confusion.

Establish you rules and be certain that he follows it. You need to reinforce these rules by giving him an award every time he heeds your rules. Being consistent is also vital, if you do not reinforce your rules all the time, your dog will become confused and he will not follow you anymore. Give rewards consistently and this will make him think that he is doing the right thing. If he disobeys, do not shout just briefly reprimand him.

Never allow your dog to sleep at your bed or worse, sleep with you. This will reinforce the idea that you are the leader and you will not let you subordinate share your spot.

Also, feed him after you have eaten because in the wild, the dominant animals or the leaders always eat first. You should also apply the same thing at your house. By doing so, you will also establish your position as the pack leader.

Create a Virtual 3D World on Your Website

,
3D ANIMATION :

VRML, which stands for virtual reality markup language, is a technology for animation and 3D modeling that lets you create 3D scenes for websites. A special VRML browser plug in lets you control the viewing of VRML components on web sites. Panoramas are another type of virtual reality component, similar in some ways to VRML in that the user needs a special plug in to view and control the viewing of the panoramic virtual reality component. However, unlike VRML panoramas are made up of a series of photographs stitched together to create one image that you can view entirely as you move your cursor across the image.

Web designers add virtual reality (VR) components to web pages for several reasons, including to make web pages more interesting and interactive, and to display an item in a 3D view.

Some common formats for panoramas include Quick Time VR, VRML2, Black Diamond's Surround Video, and Infinite Pictures SmoothMove.

VRML offers uses for many types of websites, including entertainment, education, computer aided design, product marketing, virtual malls, and much more. Panoramas are useful for these same types of websites, as well as real estate and travel.

VR components offer many advantages to web site designers. They make web sites more interesting and interactive, provide more detail for objects or places than regular flat photos, there is no need for complex programming to add a VR component to your web site , and they generally have cross-platform and cross-browser compatibility. Some disadvantages include requirement of a plug in for viewing, (in many cases), long download time for some web VR components, depending on the file size and type, and the needed skills and creativity for quality output.

Many software programs, such as Caligari's TrueSpace, Micrografx Simply 3D, Silicon Graphics Internet 3D Space Builder, and Platinum Technology's VRCreator learning edition, automatically creat VRML files for you.

Some software options for panorama creation include Apple's Quick Time VR Authoring Studio, Enroute Imaging's QuickStitch 360, Video Brush Corporation's VideoBrush Panorama, Live Picture's Photo Vista, Infinite Picture's Smooth Move, Ulead's Cool 360, and Black Diamond's Surround Video.

Now, go forth and CREATE!

Make Your Character Come to Life With Character Animation

,
3D ANIMATION :

Creating your own cartoon character is a fun and exciting activity. Do you remember the time when you were a kid, when you just loved to draw cartoon characters along with the squiggles? There is no rule that you have to stop this hobby if you are still into it as you grow into an adult. If you want to engage in character animation, there are a few factors to consider. First, think of the word character. What do you want your cartoon to be all about? Imagining what your hero or heroine's character will be can help you get an initial idea and determine how your cartoon will look like. Start with the basic geometric shapes. Circles, squares and triangles are a good way to start your drawing. Then put in the details as you go along. Remember to include in your study drawings the different facial expressions of your character, like what it will look like when angry, happy or sad. Draw about five to seven initial drafts of your characters before going on to the next step.

Once you're done with your cartoon and you are satisfied with the initial sketches, then the next step is to write the script, which is the challenging part. It is important to have a script if your character animation will involve several cartoon characters and voice actors. The longer your animation feature is, the better your script will develop. It will help you in creating a solid storyboard, which is a small series of pictures and drawings of your complete animation. It will contain the highlights and important scenes of your plot. Your scenes do not have to be detailed, the basic sketches and rough drawings will do because the storyboard will just serve as your guide. You can even draw stick figures and simple geometric shapes for the background. With this, you don't have to necessarily record your audios in order.

There are several free or paid recording software available both for the Mac and PC platform. But since this is your first character animation, just go for the free or trial ones. You will also need a good quality microphone. A mic that can filter out background noise is a good choice but can be costly. Time your voice according to your animation. Or time your animation according to your voice. But it should be stressed that you should time everything. Otherwise, your animation will look like a dubbed foreign cartoon where the lips don' match the words!

Study animation various software and stick to the one that you feel most comfortable working on before looking for more advanced software. Of course you also have to consider the effects you are going to us like the background noise, music and the sound effects. Again, because you have a storyboard, you don't have to do the animation in sequence. You can go through the scenes and just arrange them when you're done. As easy as that, you can distribute copies of your animation feature. Remember to ask for feedback so that you can improve on your next project. Who knows, maybe one day you will be able to join the rank of the elite in the field of being a character animator?

3D Magix Review - Advanced 3D Animation Studio Software

,
3D ANIMATION :

3D animation is one of the hardest fields to master when it is not taught properly. It takes some people hundreds and hundreds of hours sitting behind a computer practicing and learning how to perfect 3D animation. 3D animation is just one of those fields that you really have to have good practice and good repetitiveness to really learn how to master. But if you do learn how to use 3D animation, it is one of the most fun, exciting, and challenging fields to be in.

I always use to want to do 3D graphics, editing, and creation since I was in high school. But after high school I never had access to computer software, books, and schooling for 3D animation due to monetary issues. I gave up wanting to do it because I never had the money in order to get software and most importantly a nice computer to put that software one.

One day I was searching through the internet and came across an ad called 3D Magix. 3G Magix is an advanced 3D animation and graphics studio software. I read up on 3D Magix because it looked interesting and the ad really great information. I looked over many reviews about the product and 3D Magix was well talked about it so I decided to give it a try because it was at a very tiny price compared to much of the 3D animation software out there. It also said that I did not need any fancy computer in order to run it and it teaches me everything I wanted to know about making 3D software and the actual software to make it.

I was very excited when I first bought 3D Magix because I was finally about to learn 3D graphics and animation at the comfort of home. When I first starting using 3D Magix it started off slow, mostly because it taught me from the very beginning then became more advanced. After using the 3D Magix for two months I already learned so much about 3D animation. I was able to do some of the things I always wanted to do. 3D Magix Software had so many videos to teach you and made learning it easy and fun.

I would not suggest it for people who are not serious about learning 3D animation because it does take time and effort. 3D software involves so much information, but if you put your mind to it the information is very easy to learn. But effort is needed in order to make this work and also practice. But once you really learn it becomes so much fun to watch create hundreds of your ideas and see them come to life. The sky is the limit if you have the ability to become the 3D software studio specialist you always wanted to be.

Do You Need a 3D DVD Player to Enjoy the Full Cinematic Effects of a 3D Movie?

,
3D ANIMATION :

If you are into cinematic-enhanced movies, you might be wondering if you will need a 3D DVD player to enjoy a 3D movie. Since most of the movies now are turning 3D, movie-goers are encouraged to watch them in the theaters! But, you might not need a DVD player just to watch 3D movies. How is this possible? You just needed the right gadgets to help you enjoy the movie at home.

How does 3D work?

Traditionally it works by emitting light from the screen. This is best appreciated using red and blue glasses to maximize the effects. Conventional 3D movies work by using SD or Standard Definition methods.

Fast forward to the present, 3D movies now uses stereoscopic filming. Movies like Avatar and My Bloody Valentine use Digital 3D that is more detailed than conventional three dimensional movies.

You will appreciate a Digital 3D movie through High Definition TV due to its clarity.

Is it required to watch 3D movies using a 3D DVD player?

The answer is no. You can still watch 3D movies using your standard TV at home. Just get a pair of red and blue glasses and you are all set!

If you own a HDTV or a 3D DVD player, you get to enjoy a movie in 3D better. Instead of wearing colored glasses, 3D movies in HDTV is best watched using clear glasses to make the scenes 'pop-out'. It gives better results and the satisfaction might be closer to that in a cinema!

Here are some tricks to maximize your viewing pleasure:

* Heighten the brightness in your TV. If you are using standard television to watch a 3D animation, wearing those colored glasses might make the images dim. To avoid this, increase the brightness to compensate the dark shades from your glasses. This might improve the quality a bit.

* Switch off the lights: You get to experience the full cinematic effects by dimming the room. This enhances the images and projects other bright-colored scenery from the screen. It also lessens the double-vision, halo effects and improves the brightness of the effects.

* Sit closer to the television: You will get a better view and focus if you sit in front -- not on the sides. If you must, you can sit a little closer to appreciate the visuals.

So grab a good pair of red and blue glasses, pop-corn, some soda and company and enjoy a three dimensional movie today!

Tips on How to Live Longer

,
3D ANIMATION :

What is the secret to living longer? Is it in the genes? Families with history of longevity do have a good chance of living longer. But that alone does not guarantee a longer life.

You can start with attitude. Being a positive e thinker can not only impact the quality of your life, but can contribute to how long you can live. In 2002, researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., found that optimistic people decreased their risk of early death by 50 percent compared with those who leaned more towards pessimism.

Also stress can affect the immune system and cause a variety of health issues. You cannot avoid stress in your life, but knowing how to handle the stress and remain positive can help contribute to a longer and healthier life. Did you know that owning a pet can help in handling stress? Rebecca Johnson, a professor of gerontological nursing at the University of Missouri at Columbia, showed that interaction with pets does, in fact, reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

And having a pet may add years to your life. One of the first studies in this arena, which appeared in "Public Health Reports" in 1980, showed that the survival rates of heart attack victims who had a pet were 28 percent higher than those of patients who didn't have an animal companion. "The health effects seem to be very real and by no means mystical," says Alan Beck, director of the Center for the Human-Animal Bond at Purdue University. "Contact with companion animals triggers a relaxation response," he says. Another factor in living longer is not being overweight. Research shows that obesity can lead to medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease and various cancers. So powerful are certain lifestyle choices that recommended diets along with maintenance of physical activity and appropriate body mass can, over time, reduce the incidence of cancer by 30 percent to 40 percent, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Avoid smoking and eating too much sugar. Both of these weaken the bodies immune system which can contribute to health issues.

Exercising at least 30 minutes a day has shown to strengthen the immune system and may increase your chances of a longer life. And last of all learn how to life each day. Don't take things so seriously that you are angry and negative as this affects your overall well-being.

What is an "Underfoot" Dog?

,
3D ANIMATION :

Quite simply, an "Underfoot" dog is a small dog breed which can receive serious injuries if stepped on.

Some of the most popular small breeds are the Pomeranian, the Chihuahua, Miniature Poodle, Maltese, Shih Tzu and the ever so popular Yorkshire Terrier, known as the Yorkie.

There is a huge demand for not only small breeds, but for small dogs who are at the very low end of the accepted weight scale. The AKC, the largest and most respected dog club organization in the United States lists an accepted weight range.

Even so, thousands of people want to have a dog who is either at the very bottom of that accepted size or even under it.

What these owners or potential owners do not realize is that having a very tiny dog equals a great amount of responsibility. Sadly, many owners have obtained a small breed dog only to severely injure that dog by accident.

People must realize that having a dog, especailly a small one, is very much akin to having a baby. The dog will be an "Underfoot" dog. You must be constantly aware of where the dog is. If you trip over or step on one of these dog breeds, you will not just say "opps!", you will most likely be rushing your Pom, Chi, Yorkie or other dog to the animal hospital.

These breeds can receive broken limbs, even if you do not put all of your weight down. One element that makes these small dog breeds so prone to being under your feet is that they are known for being very loyal, very personable and following their owner around the home, like a shadow.

People tend to get busy, they may be walking around the house while talking on the phone, cleaning a room, carrying laundry or other. The dog will be right underfoot, and this is when it only takes a split second for the dog to be accidentally stepped on.

Recovery from broken limbs takes a long time. The dog will be fairly immobilized. Sometimes, the bones will not heal just right and the dog may have a limp for the rest of its life. Sadly, some dogs are killed when stepped on.

Beside having to be aware of where you dog is at all times, so that he or she is not stepped on, one must also be aware that sitting on a small breed dog can be fatal to the dog. If you are not looking and your 4 pound Yorkie in lying in the corner of your sofa and you sit down, this can be devastating.

These small dogs can be injured when jumping down from furniture, when being yanked by a leash and more.

Please take the time to learn about a dog breed before you bring one into your home. Toy breed dogs are wonderful companions. However, to make sure that your new fluffy friend lives a long, happy and safe life, take a bit of time to learn about how to care for them and how to keep them out of danger.

White Pitbulls - Why Are White Pitbulls So Much Better?

,
3D ANIMATION :

There are many different names for pitbulls including white pitbulls; black pitbulls, red pitbulls and those are only to mention a few of the most popular sough after pitbulls. These are not an indication of the type of dogs they are or what mannerisms they might display as they are only to label the colours that the pitbulls are bred to be. White pitbulls are not typically sought after as red or blue pitbulls are however, white pitbulls are among the most popular colours.

There are many white pitbulls that fit under the classification of moo moo pitbulls as they are patterned somewhat like a dairy cow with a most often prominent black patch that covers the entire area of one of the pitbulls eyes. This indicates a Moo Moo pattern of the white pitbull. These are the most popular and sought after of the white pitbulls and are surprisingly common which may be due to the fact that breeders tend to breed more of these by accident when trying to breed other popular colors.

The Pitbull Stigma

There is a huge negative stigma that is now attached to those who own pitbulls as well against pitbulls themselves and it is undeserved typically. The American Temperament Society does testing on dogs every year and every year the pitbull comes back ranking in better temperament than most other breeds. Even the little white poodle has a more aggressive behavior pattern than that of the white pitbull and any other pitbull in general speaking. In fact, this society tests all kinds of dogs including the popular Border Collie, Dachshund, Pomeranian and even the Beagle have temperaments that are much less desirable than that of the pitbull however the average home doesn't think twice about introducing a new member from these breeds into their homes.

With that said accompanied by the knowledge that the white pitbulls are just a color grouping more than anything, it should be noted that you should seriously consider if a white pitbull or any other pitbull is the right pet for you. It should depend on your ability to provide healthy exercise that is abundant and daily as exercise is extremely important to a pitbulls health and well being. It is similarly imperative that you have a big enough area within your living quarters as well as outside to provide your white pitbulls with plenty of room. Always be a diligent and responsible pitbull owner so the stigma can be overcome of the pitbull who has unjustly received a horrible reputation.

Interview With Terry, The Reading Tub, Inc

,
3D ANIMATION :

How and when did The Reading Tub get started? What’s its mission?

I have always loved to read and, when our daughter joined us in November 2001, I found sharing books with her to be great fun! One day I was talking with my sister-in-law about children's books (positives & negatives) and she suggested I start a website for parents and teachers.

So I did. I found a do-it-yourself website company in June 2003 and started playing around with ideas. The whole thing started out as a hobby site, with some research, and lots of input and creative ideas from two close friends. Within a year, it had started to grow, and authors started to find us. So I married my love of books with my passion for literacy and launched The Reading Tub, Inc. as a non-profit.

Our mission is to give adults (parents, teachers, librarians, tutors, grandparents, et al.) the tools they need for helping kids with reading. The website has two parts. There is what I call the literacy services side: facts about literacy, information about reading with kids, stats, etc. Then there is the reading side: our unique profiles that help parents find books that match their child's interest whether they are an infant being read to, a pre-teen who is reading independently, or a child (of any age) who is struggling with developing their reading skills.

When I started the Reading Tub, I focused on the "learning" aspect of literacy. That's where "Turning a page … Opening the World"® comes from. Get a child to love (or even just like) reading and you will expand his natural curiosity and imagination … and along the way engender a love of learning.

But our goal really is bigger than just learning. It's simply to bring reading home to families. This is my mantra because it is a statement captures the various facets of children's literacy and reading on several levels. We want to …

  • Encourage parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles to read with the children in their lives … even kids who can read independently can benefit from time shared reading aloud with Mom or Dad.

  • Help the adults find great books that match their kids' interests and reading levels (and skip the over-hyped stuff!).

  • Provide information that explains why reading with a child at home is so important.

  • Post articles and provide links to resources that help parents/grandparents/teachers teach their children to read.

Who are your reviewers and how may an author or publisher contact you about a review request?

Our reviewers are parents who read with their children and kids who are reading themselves. Some of the parents are teachers or former teachers, some are reading mentors, some just like to read books with their kids. It is very important to us that when someone is trying to find a book for a child, that they know what other children think of the book. Professional reviews are great, but getting feedback from the person who is the intended audience is particularly important to us. We try to wear several hats … like the grandparent who wants to find a book for a child, but wants to know what other kids thought about it first.

In March 2004 we partnered with Be the Star You Are!® another non-profit that empowers children and families through positive media. Their message is that to be a leader you must be a reader. BTSYA runs an after-school center for youth at risk, and they created a Teen STAR Book Review Team. We send them books for the 9 to 12 target audience. The kids read the books and write the reviews. I post them on the website with their logo.

Authors and publishers can contact me through the Website. We have a contact form just for that purpose. I would like to add a footnote. We are more than happy to introduce the world to books published for kids, and we would love the opportunity to read yours. But our role is not to help you sell them. Over the years we have had authors who get angry at us for only recommending that someone borrow their book at the library and not buy it. I can truly appreciate the pride authors take in their work – we do, too – but asking for a review doesn't guarantee that the reader will rave about it.

We are a public charity dedicated to children's literacy and family reading. Our goal is to help get our kids excited about reading. We think telling people to ask for the book in their local library is an endorsement, too. Not everyone can afford to buy books for a personal library.

When we review a book, we are looking at its substantive qualities: did our child like this book? is this a story we enjoyed reading with our child? Does it have educational value (explicit or implicit) that can bring reading to life and make it relevant? Would we recommend that others read this book? We just want to make sure that kids have the skills to READ your book.

Do you have any data on how many American children read compared to other countries?

The National Center for Education Statistics has a chart that dates to 2003. In that chart, "Reading Literacy" for US students is 11th among OECD countries (countries participating in the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development), and 15th when about a dozen non-OECD countries are added. [cite: http://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d06/tables/dt06_397.asp]

Statistics can be very valuable, but they can also be very pliable, so I try to use them judiciously. Generally, I will overlay them with behaviors and practices that are relevant to literacy in its broader terms. For example, one way to encourage kids to read is to have adults MODEL reading. If a child sees you reading then s/he will accept reading as something important. Well, I read an article not to long ago that said in a recent AP Poll, 1 of every 4 people polled (1,000 surveyed) did not read one book last year. That's 25% of the adult population.

Layer on top of that that more than 20% of adults read at or below a fifth-grade level, and in 1992, more than 44 million adults could not read well enough to read a simple story with a child. [Cite: as presented on http://www.getcaughtreading.org] Blended together, it is a pretty clear picture of the behavior pattern we're creating for our children.

Think about the long-term impact on our kids and their future success. Analysis of a study published by the National Center for Education Statistics in 2006 shows that nationwide, 38 percent of public school fourth-graders and 29 percent of eighth graders still read below basic levels. For fourth graders, state scores of children reading below the basic level range from 32 percent in Delaware to 67 percent in the Discrict of Columbia. That means one in three children are struggling in reading. Until recently, data suggested that the greatest deficiency was reading abilities among boys; data released this summer is showing that girls, too, are now struggling with literacy.

Then we send our kids to college! Kenneth Gray, in his book The Baccalaureate Game: Is It Right for All Teens? (1996), noted that 80 percent of entering freshman cannot read well enough to do college work. That analysis is now more than 10 years old, but I would venture that things haven’t changed much, because for the Fall 2000 semester 76 percent of colleges and universities were offering at least one remedial reading, writing or math course. And it doesn't look like things will change soon.

What seem to be the most popular genre/themes with young children, middle readers, and young adults?

We ask visitors to register with the Reading Tub® so we can determine their reading interests. Having that data helps us prioritize the placement of books we already have for review; and it also helps us see if we are "thin" in a category that match our visitors' interests. If we need to, we can send out a query to authors and publishers to refill the shelves with books that fit their interest categories.

Most of our visitors who registered are reading with kids ages 3 to 8. In that audience, "picture books" is the most common answer, but that covers a broad array of subjects. Animal stories and adventure are neck-and-neck for second place. In houses where families are reading with kids in the 9 to 12 audience, adventure beats out fantasy (though not by much). I need to add, though, that there are lots of registered readers who have no preference for a genre.

Do you think there’s a saturation of the fantasy genre at the moment, or simply enough to meet the demand?

The short answer is yes. One of my parent reviewers asked that I please give him a break from the fantasies. He wants to be able to have enough diversity in what he's reading to give each book a fair review. And when you have too many fantasy stories together they begin to read like they're using the same formula.

That said, for the reader who loves fantasies, there are some great ones out there. We created a page on our site to list some of the really good books we've found. Here's the link: [http://www.thereadingtub.com/search_displayNew.asp?id=1]

I am pleased to report that we have gotten some (what I think are cool) historical fiction novels lately. I can't wait to see those reviews come back.

The Harry Potter series has been wonderful for spurning creativity and getting (and keeping) kids reading, and there seems to be a rush to become the next JK Rowling. As a former editor, I think that there may be times when authors or publishers rush to get something out there so they don't miss that "hot" genre. So sometimes, I think they push too hard or forget to take a step back and get a fresh look at what they've got. I've seen some books that are being touted as a series in Book One. It seems to me that if you're holding out information for the next book, you could be shortchanging your readers on the first one.

What seem to be the best books for reluctant readers?

It is really important that reluctant readers feel they are moving through a book quickly. They tend to like books with lots of 'white space' around the edges and they need pictures to take up some of the page. Shorter sentences and action-driven plots also help.

During the school year, I volunteer with a program that offers tutoring to first graders who are struggling with reading. It is an incredibly enlightening experience, and last year I worked with a boy who would get discouraged when we read books that had more than two or three sentences on a page. So then we would partner read. He got to practice his reading, and I helped by moving the story along. In some ways it is more important to keep the child reading (he can see the words you read) than it is to MAKE him read everything on a page.

For third and fourth graders, we need books with pictures that offer more sophisticated plots. They don't want to read Henry and Mudge or the Froggy books anymore. That just reminds them of how hard it was to read when they were in first and second grade. I have been very impressed with some of the books we've seen with more sophisticated stories and adventures. They are an excellent bridge and can encourage struggling or remedial readers.

How much reading is good reading?

I'm not sure about the best way to answer that. The general recommendation is 20 minutes per day, though I have seen a recommendation for 10 minutes/day, too. Reading with a child is a dynamic, individual process. The goal is to create a positive association with reading. The more it is forced, the more the child will struggle against it.

Reading isn't always about practicing letter sounds or learning words. Some of the best reading can be the shared experience of flipping through the pages of a book to look at the pictures, and maybe talk about them. You can encourage your child to read just by sitting together and sharing a book. Wordless books are great for that.

As kids get older, the actual reading part will be more important. Reading is the one skill that has to be practiced at home, every day. You want to do your best to make this a positive experience. As much as you can, find books that match their interests and reading level. Librarians and teachers are incredible resources that can help you with that. The more you can offer books on subjects they like, the easier it will be to get in that practice time.

My daughter is just starting to read, so we've transitioned from some of the great books we love to share to books with vocabulary and sentence structure that suits her ability. She will rave about a book, and my husband will complain that it's "boring." But that's part of the process … simple and repetitious. So we sprinkle in some of the family favorites with the learning-to-read titles to keep it fun for everyone.

How do you see the future of children’s books now that electronic and print-on-demand publishing are becoming increasingly popular?

I have mixed emotions. On the one hand, I think they offer parents an educational alternative to television and computer games. On the other hand, though, it is yet another format that sits a child in front of a screen. Like TV, sitting at the computer could become a babysitter that absorbs lots of time and doesn't encourage human contact. The average Kindergartener has spent more than 5,000 hours in front of a TV! That's a lot of "screen time."

We have received and reviewed a number of electronic books. Some are CDs that you listen to in the car or on your home stereo. Others are DVDs. Some are books with virtual pages that you click with a mouse and require someone to read the screen. We have received some DVD stories that include audio (i.e., there is a reader and moving highlights to point out words as it reads). We have also gotten multi-media products that offer the story, as well as additional educational material.

The multi-media products are my favorite, because I think they engage a child more than just a book. They also don't require my 100% participation for reading the book and give the child a sense of independence in their reading.

Are ebooks and POD books popular with your readers?

Actually, I have found eBooks hard to place with families. Most of our reviewers like/ want the experience of sharing the book with their child. Unless you have a laptop, when you read a book on the computer, you need a desk and enough space for two chairs. It's not quite the same cozy experience.

We were reading an eBook on the computer recently and my daughter complained that it was just like watching TV. She tends to like the eBooks that are CDs that she can put in her little Boombox. She will listen and re-listen to those stories for hours. I like that. She gets the benefit of reading by learning words and language, but she also has to use her imagination to visualize the characters and events.

I think if you have children who read independently, eBooks and POD titles could be popular. Especially when you are traveling!

What can people do to help The Reading Tub and literacy in general?

Please read with a child. Just 20 minutes of reading each day can make a HUGE difference in a child's reading achievement. There is a website called Ladders to Learning, and they had this to say about why we need to read with our kids: The group of children who were read to on a daily basis were 1.6 times as likely to be rated by their teachers as being near the top of their kindergarten class in learning skills, and 2.3 times as likely to be near the top of their class in communication skills. These relationships hold true regardless of the income of the child’s household and the education of the child’s mother.

If you don't have children, visit your local library and see if you can volunteer to read during story time. Or call your local family services center to see if there are programs you can volunteer with. If you're worried about "how" they teach reading these days, don't be. The important thing is that a child has an adult who supports them and says "I believe in you" just by helping. Last year we commissioned a set of articles about Guided Reading by Cathy Puett Miller, the Literacy Ambassador. The articles offer steps about ways to read with a child. Here's the link: http://www.thereadingtub.com/pdfs/our_guided_reading_set.pdf.

We would love to have some more book reviewers. We have a list of more than 200 titles on our "wish list." Some of these are books that people have asked us to read, but we haven't been able to get to them because we have so many sitting on our shelves already. All it takes is a trip to the library to read one of these books.

When you visit our Website, please take the time to register. We don't ask for a lot of information, and we don't send out a lot of eMail. We just want to know about the books you are reading with kids (grandkids, kids in playgroup, kids at school). Tell us your zip code and we can add your local library to our list. We don't have any registered readers in Nebraska or North Dakota, so if you know someone … spread the word. I would love to have a link to at least one library in every state by the end of the year!

Some people believe there’s simply too much sex and violence in young adult novels these days, while others believe books should reflect our present culture and society. What’s your opinion?

I don't know that I would limit the "too much" label to just young adult novels. I have been very surprised at the content marketed to younger children in picture books and early reader chapter books.

That said, we don't tend to get many books that cause us to raise an eyebrow. It may be that our target audience is younger; or it could be that authors/publishers for YA material don't see us as fitting their review demographic.

I would like to add, though, that we have received some incredible books for young adults that our teen reviewers have loved. The teens see stories with lots of action and characters they can relate to; the parents see books with wholesome stories and life lessons.

Keeping an eye on what our kids read is part of being a parent. I would put it in the same box as knowing about what movies they watch, what video games they play, or who their friends are. I think there is more to our culture and society than sex and violence. Yes, there is plenty of it and it is marketed to our kids as "cool." We can only shield our kids so much. At some point, we have to have faith that they will make the right choices. As parents, we get the "pleasure" of making the hard call when we have to.

Is there anything else you would like to say about you or your organization?

The Reading Tub® is the result of my own love of reading. I am very lucky to be able to build this resource and share my enthusiasm with others. If we can inspire just one person to read with a child, then we will have helped the world!

Thank you for this opportunity to share my passion.
